I recently had an interesting conversation with writing coach Stephanie Mitchell about the meaning of transition vs transformation. My quick Google search uncovered these definitions:
Transition = “the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another”
Transformation = “a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance”
The onset of spring in Southern Ontario is transformation writ large. The drama of the seasonal change in Toronto over the last week literally became a theatre, as people streamed into local parks to witness the cherry blossoms up close.
As human beings, we are changing all the time. Some changes are more conscious transitions when we actively choose to move from one state to another – seeking a new job or promotion, heading back to school, starting a new relationship. There are also points in our careers and lives when unexpected transition happens, triggered by an event like a job loss, illness, divorce or an unexpected opportunity. Either way, we may notice over time that things have shifted and we are no longer the person we want to be or living the life we want to live.
Whether you are preparing for a welcome change in your life or find yourself in an uncomfortable transition period, choose to make it happen in a way that brings out your best.
Ultimately, going through a period of transition creates the possibility for personal transformation: a blossoming of the person you want to be and a chance to live a better, more vibrant life.

Reflections on Transition
Consider a past transition in your work or life:
What makes you proud when you look back at how you responded?
What would you do differently if you had a chance to redo that moment in time?
Now identify a change that you are anticipating this year:
Taking on a new role?Planning for early retirement? Starting a business? Becoming a caregiver?
Whether it is a planned or unexpected transition, consider what you will need to respond effectively in the face of that change.
What does your past experience tell you?
How can you prepare yourself to bring out your best?
What comes next?
I am grateful for every opportunity to work with individuals during changes in their careers and personal lives. The Transition Coaching Group is the next evolution in my practice – to create space for collective wisdom, shared experience and allies to support each other through transition and transformation. I hope you will consider joining us! I am also welcoming new individual clients who prefer to work 1:1 with a coach.
